Blonde Woman Driving a CarSelecting the right coverage, limits, and deductibles for your auto insurance needs is essential. One of the key decisions you'll need to make is how much liability coverage you need.

How Much Liability Insurance Do You Need?

Most states require auto liability insurance. However, statistics show that anywhere from 1 in 3 to 1 in 5 drivers don't have auto insurance. The limits required are referred to as state minimums; in Tennessee the minimum limits are $25K per person / $50K per accident. Those limits are the Bodily Injury limits, and covers the "other person" should you injure, disable them, cause them to lose of income, or should they sue for pain and suffering. The state minimums will keep you legal, but they're certainly not what we recommend. It's important to note it is not mandated that you carry Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist, Collision, Comprehensive and other coverages.
A general rule at our firm is to present no less than $100K per person / $300K per accident. However, we will always recommend you consider higher limits of $250K per person / $500K per accident.  If you were to injure someone and they missed any significant amount of time away from work, and had significant medical costs, there is a very good chance the state minimums would not cover the damages. This means your assets and future income would be at risk. When talking with prospective clients, we have learned that the general population doesn't realize their home, investments, and future earnings can be on the line if they don't have proper coverage.

To answer the question "When is minimum auto insurance really enough?" our professional opinion is never.
